KBS Maritime has begun a major programme of regeneration to 1 Basin and 6 Dock, two cornerstones of Portsmouth Naval Base’s historic environment, as part of a long‑term project designed to preserve the dock infrastructure. Initial piling works are now underway, marking the first phase of this significant restoration effort.
A Modern Engineering Project in a Historic Environment
The project, which will span the next year, will see the repair of the existing dock walls, culverts, penstocks, and bollards to ensure the stability of these vital structures. The project also involves removing and replacing the old caisson, and carefully restoring the cill and surrounding masonry, which have endured centuries of use. Once the temporary cofferdam has served its purpose, we will remove it and install a new steel caisson, further strengthening the dock’s defences for the future.
We are also managing the abstraction and discharge of water from within the cofferdam to maintain a safe and controlled working environment. This regeneration is being delivered in collaboration with our supply chain partner, Mackley, whose expertise is instrumental in maintaining the highest standards throughout the works.
“Preserving the historic fabric of Portsmouth Naval Base is both a privilege and a responsibility,” said Paul Cole, Waterfront Programme Manager, for KBS Maritime. “Our careful approach ensures that these vital structures will continue to serve future generations, while respecting their remarkable heritage.”
Preserving Centuries of Naval Heritage
Like many features within the Naval Base, 1 Basin and 6 Dock were granted Grade I listed status in 1999, recognising their exceptional historical and architectural significance dating back to the late 1600’s. Within this unique environment, every step of the regeneration process requires careful and expert management, balancing the demands of modern engineering with the imperative to preserve a world-renowned heritage asset.
