Who better to tell you all about our Project Management Degree Apprenticeship Programme than our current apprentices!
Read below to hear what our current apprentices Chloe, Nathan and Jake have to say about their time so far at KBS and their experience doing a degree apprenticeship.

Meet Chloe!
Tell us about yourself and why you decided to do a Degree Apprenticeship here at KBS Maritime?
Choosing to pursue a degree apprenticeship with KBS Maritime marked a significant step in my professional development. I was drawn to the opportunity because it offered the rare chance to combine academic study with meaningful, hands-on industry experience. The apprenticeship model offered a structured way to gain a recognised qualification while contributing to live projects and learning directly from experienced professionals. KBS Maritime in particular stood out for its reputation for excellence, its collaborative culture, and its commitment to developing early‑career talent. It felt like the right environment to begin building a long‑term career.
What do you think the benefits are of doing a Degree Apprenticeship?
One of the most rewarding aspects of the apprenticeship has been the immediate relevance of what I learn. Concepts introduced in my academic modules often appear in my day‑to‑day work, allowing me to apply them straight away and deepen my understanding. There are many benefits that come with choosing this route, with one of the main ones having the ability to earn a salary while studying at university. It also gives me continuous development of practical, industry-specific skills, with help and support from my experienced colleagues. This combination has made the learning process both purposeful and engaging.
What did you hope to get out of doing a Degree Apprenticeship, and do you feel you have gotten this so far?
When I began the apprenticeship, I hoped to gain practical experience, build confidence in a professional environment, and develop a clearer sense of direction for my future career. I can confidently say that I have achieved all of these aims so far.
The variety of work I have been involved in has broadened my understanding of the maritime sector, and the support I have received has enabled me to grow both academically and professionally. I feel well‑equipped to continue progressing, and the experience has already exceeded many of my initial expectations.
What advice would you give to someone considering a Degree Apprenticeship/ your younger self?
If I could offer advice to someone considering a degree apprenticeship, it would be to embrace the opportunity with confidence. You do not need to have every detail of your future mapped out. What matters most is a willingness to learn, to ask questions, and to take ownership of your development.
To my younger self, I would say: trust your instincts, be open to new challenges, and recognise that growth often happens outside your comfort zone.
What do you enjoy the most about working for KBS Maritime?
One of the aspects I appreciate most about working at KBS Maritime is the opportunity to be based within the historic dockyard. The environment provides a unique connection to the maritime sector and offers daily insight into the scale and importance of the operations we support. Combined with the organisation’s collaborative culture and the professionalism of the teams I work with, the dockyard setting creates an engaging and supportive place to develop both academically and professionally.

Meet Nathan!
What is your Degree Apprenticeship in? Can you tell me about it and what you do?
I take on the responsibility of managing my own projects, through effective governance, risk mitigation and maintaining strong relationships with a range of different stakeholders, both on site and in a meeting environment.
What made you decide to do a Degree Apprenticeship?
I wanted to enhance my employability by gaining desirable qualifications with valuable, real-life experiences and knowledge. Degree apprenticeships also enable you to develop a range of skills for life, including both job specific and soft skills.
How supported do you feel?
At KBS Maritime, I am privileged to work in a highly supportive environment. Before I even began my first day at work, I was met with my fantastic mentor who has constantly guided me from the beginning. I am also accompanied by a greatly supportive team, whom I have shadowed and gained valuable insights from.
What advice would you give to someone considering a Degree Apprenticeship?
My number one piece of advice would be to absolutely go for it and apply to as many as you can (I can highly recommend KBS Maritime being one)! If you’re like me and would rather do something more practical, apprenticeships are definitely for you and provide an enjoyable work/ study balance.
What do you enjoy most about working for KBS Maritime?
I think my favourite part about working for KBS Maritime would be the range of unique and specialist projects I’m given the opportunity to conduct, to enhance/ upgrade Portsmouth Naval Base, as well as the highly strong and supportive team I get to work with.

Meet Jake!
What is your Degree Apprenticeship in? Can you tell me about it and what you do?
My degree apprenticeship is in Project Management. I am part of a smaller team inside of lots of bigger teams within the company. This team all contribute to our programme through our projects which help KBS achieve their goals for each year.
What does a typical day look like for you?
I start my workdays at 7am, I will begin by checking my emails and clearing what I can from my to-do list from the previous day. I then check my calendar and organise what I need for the day going forward. Often, I will have meetings or visits to site booked in which I will fulfil; and come back to my desk to act upon the notes I have taken. If there are contractors I need to call or email to clarify anything I do that too. Once I have finished for the day, I pack up at 3:30 and make my way to the gym and then home. On a university day this will start at 9, we will have lectures from then until 12 which we then have an hour lunch and the same until 4. For me, this is every Tuesday.
What is your favourite thing about doing a Degree Apprenticeship? What do you think are the benefits of doing one?
My favourite thing is the people I am able to work with. Everyone at KBS has been incredibly helpful and enjoyable to work with. This has meant I have been able to maximise my development professionally and personally and truly been able to grow. I would be lying if I said the debt-free degree and salary aren’t enticing at all!
What were your goals at the start of your Degree Apprenticeship?
My goals at the start were to become someone who is competent in a project management environment, someone who is dedicated and to develop my ability in the workplace as well as outside of it to build and maintain strong relationships with those important to me.
What do you enjoy the most about working for KBS Maritime?
KBS is full of individuals who are always willing to help and have a laugh but are also incredibly intelligent and knowledgeable, everyone pulls their weight when it is required and as a result you don’t feel like you’re working. Projects may become stressful, but your team is always there if you are finding it difficult to discover a solution.
