The new cable barge has arrived in Portsmouth, marking a significant milestone in a project that has been nearly two years in the making. This project, which is now nearing its conclusion, represents the culmination of extensive design work and collaborative efforts.
Specifically designed to support operations at HM Naval Base Portsmouth, the new cable barge is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the KBS Maritime Project and Operational teams. Their efforts, combined with the support from Attis and the craftsmanship of Harland & Wolff, have resulted in a vessel that incorporates significant enhancements over its predecessor.
The design of the new barge, while inspired by the long-serving existing cable barge, includes improvements aimed at boosting operational efficiency and safety at the Naval Base.
Despite its seemingly simple design, the 26-metre cable barge is an essential asset for the Royal Navy. Its operation involves specialist teams from KBS and BAE who anticipate its high performance and the safety it ensures. A considerable amount of effort has been dedicated to devising the optimal solution, ensuring that the barge meets the rigorous demands of its intended use.
The barge is used as floating platform to lower anchors and associated cables chains from ships so that they can be tested and refurbished as required. The barge will be used to support alongside operations for Mine Hunters, Type 23’s, Type 45’s, and, when commissioned, the new Type 26’s and Type 31’s.
In the coming month, the cable barge will undergo a series of trials and commissioning tests. These tests are crucial to verify its performance and ensure it meets all operational requirements. Upon successful completion of these trials, the barge will commence its duties across the base later this summer, further enhancing the operational capabilities of HM Naval Base Portsmouth.
