Introducing Rachel Holmes, a seasoned professional with 18 years at PNB. In this interview, Rachel discusses her first major project at KBS Maritime, the refurbishment of Fender Spacing Units (FSUs), and highlights the supportive and collaborative work culture at PNB. She also shares valuable advice for new apprentices, emphasizing the importance of learning from experienced colleagues.
Can you share a specific project or task that you found particularly rewarding?
I have been involved in the refurbishment of the FSU’s (Fender Spacing Unit) as a part of my first project for KBS Maritime. The FSU’s support the carriers when alongside PNB, we have 5 in total but this project was to only refurbish the first 3. This was a challenging project right from the beginning as it was quite tough to work out the logistics, when alongside each carrier requires 2 FSU’s so when they are both here 4 FSU’s are in use at any one time with a spare in case of an emergency. It took a while to get agreement from the Kings Harbour Master to take the spare away from PNB and start the refurbishment works. The first FSU was taken to Portico in May 2024 to have its survey completed, once that is completed then the refurbishment works can start. This was the same process for all 3 units. We are now just starting works on the third unit with the aim of having it back in service by February 2025. I have been very proud to have this as my first project and it has been very rewarding seeing the fully refurbished units be put back into service alongside the carriers.
What do you enjoy most about the work environment and culture here?
I have worked in PNB for 18 years and really enjoy working here. Things don’t come without their challenges but the people here make it worth it. There is always someone to ask for advice and people are happy to help each other out. I am happy that now I can pass on some of the knowledge I have gained over the last 18 years onto the next generation. I enjoy the fact that there are a variety of people that work here and am glad to see the female workforce increase.
What advice would you give to someone considering joining our apprenticeship program?
The best bit of advice I could give is listen and make notes. When I first started in projects in October 2023 I literally followed my mentor around with a pen and paper and wrote down everything he had to say. Ask as many questions as you need, working within PNB is like no other place you will ever work and you will gain a lot of knowledge from very experienced people.
