Sarah Hedges – Electrical Engineer – Employee Profile

What has been your career path before joining KBS Maritime?

Prior to joining KBS I worked as the lead electrical engineer at Hamble Aerostructures Ltd (Formally GE Aviation). I spent 17 years at Hamble, progressing my way through roles as an apprentice, to a hands-on technician and up to their lead electrical engineer. I had many other responsibilities too…Asbestos and legionella management, SOP and safety procedure writing and implementation, Service level agreements and contractor co-ordination, facility/plant/machinery installation and commissioning projects.

What are some of the things you do in your role now?

Here at KBS I am very privileged to work with an amazing team as an electrical engineer in the Engineering, Assurance & Compliance Team (EnACT). I provide engineering support to KBS and other teams on the base and assure our customer the MOD that the base facilities, plant and equipment are compliant and safe to operate. I have also recently been assigned the role of the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations (DSEAR) Responsible Person and look forward to the new responsibility.

What do you enjoy most about working at KBS Maritime?

The most enjoyable part of my role is knowing that I have a front row seat in enabling the base and KBS to become all they can be in a safe and compliant way and spending time with all the amazing people in my team and supporting teams across the base.

What did you want to be when you were growing up?

When I was growing up, I really wanted to be a palaeontologist. I absolutely loved dinosaurs and other historical creatures…not sure how that evolved into electrical engineering though!?

What are the top 3 things on your ‘bucket list’?

  • Scuba diving in Australia.
  • Dog sledding in Alaska/Canada.
  • Enjoy life as much as possible!
